Hand-carved wooden statue of Rhiannon, one of the most important female figures in Welsh Celtic mythology and a central character in the Mabinogi. Her name is commonly connected with the meaning “Great Queen” or “Divine Queen,” and her stories are closely associated with horses, sovereignty, endurance and the mysterious Otherworld.

Rhiannon first appears riding a magical horse that no rider can catch, and throughout the Mabinogi she demonstrates remarkable strength, intelligence, dignity and perseverance. Her connection with horses has led to her being widely interpreted as a Welsh horse goddess and a figure of sovereignty, although the exact relationship between the medieval Rhiannon and earlier Celtic goddesses remains debated.
