Hand-carved wooden statue of Merlin, the legendary wizard, prophet and mysterious figure of Welsh and Arthurian tradition. Known as Myrddin in Welsh tradition, Merlin became one of the most famous magical figures of medieval European legend.

The familiar Merlin emerged from the writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century, who combined traditions surrounding the Welsh prophet Myrddin Wyllt with the legendary figure of Ambrosius. Geoffrey's Merlin became a prophet and adviser connected with the early history of King Arthur and the kings of Britain.

Merlin is traditionally associated with prophecy, magic, wisdom, shapeshifting and the mysteries of the natural world. Later Arthurian stories transformed him into the famous wizard and mentor of King Arthur, making him one of the most recognizable figures in Celtic and medieval mythology.
